| Purchasing a Domain Name Owning a website starts with the purchase of a domain name. Costs vary depending on which registrar you choose. Annually they can run from as little as $8.95 up to about $35. You'll want to shop around a little (on the Internet) to get the best deal. You can purchase a domain for as short a period as one year and as much as ten years, with a price break for the more years you purchase. We do our best to keep on top of who is offering the best deal so count on us to help with this process. When you purchase a domain you become the Registrant. This means that you own that domain. If you have purchased a domain and find that you are NOT listed as the Registrant on the documentation, you need to discuss this with your webmaster. If anyone other than yourself is listed as the Registrant you are have been misled and can take action to get the domain properly registered. Your domain name is called a website address or URL (Universal Resource Locator). This will be how people find you on the Internet. The two most popular extensions for domains are .com and .net. Those extensions have been around for as long as the Internet has been available for website hosting. For example, the domain name of this website is CRSDesign.com. There are other extensions now as a result of the incredible success of the Internet, but stick to the .com or .net extensions as they are the ones most people are familiar with. It will make your website address easier to remember. Keep it simple; use the name of your existing business if you can. You may have to get a little creative if your exact business name is already purchased. For example, let's say your business name is Green Acres Farm. Your ideal domain name would be GreenAcresFarm.com or GreenAcresFarm.net. What if those domains are already purchased? Then you have to get the creative bit going. What does your farm specialize in? Let's say it's exotic game birds, like pheasants. You would then look for the domain name GreenAcresBirdFarm.com or GreenAcresBirds.com or maybe even GreenAcresGameBirds.com (or .net). Take some time to find the right domain name, one that sticks in people's minds. You'll be glad you did. |
